Veteran Hollywood producer John Morrissey (American History X) and filmmaker Collier Landry break down the work of several Oscar-nominated casting directors and why casting is one of the most important — and often misunderstood — parts of filmmaking.
The hosts discuss this year’s nominees and their careers, beginning with Nina Gold (nominated for Hamnet), known for her work on Conclave, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Game of Thrones — where she served as the main casting director across all seasons and won multiple Emmys — as well as Slow Horses, 1917, and other major productions.
They also examine Francine Maisler (nominated for Sinners), whose credits include The Revenant, 12 Years a Slave, Birdman, Succession, Moneyball, and Uncut Gems (with Jennifer Venditti). The conversation touches on how Maisler’s long career could make her a strong contender, even though the award recognizes casting for a single film.
The discussion continues with Jennifer Venditti (nominated for Marty Supreme), known for Bugonia, The Smashing Machine, Euphoria, Good Time, and White Boy Rick.
They also highlight Cassandra Kulukundis, who has cast every Paul Thomas Anderson film and shares casting credit on The Brutalist, and Brazilian nominee Gabriel Domingues, a multi-hyphenate filmmaker and casting director.
The conversation wraps with a broader look at what casting directors actually do, how they shape performances and careers, and reflections on respected industry colleagues, including Valerie McCaffrey and Rick Pagano.
