The Collier Landry Show

The Worst Kind of Relief

There is a kind of relief that doesn’t feel good. I was 11 years old when I was finally told that investigators had found my mother. For weeks, I had insisted that she hadn’t simply left—that something terrible had happened to her.

Learning the truth meant I wasn’t crazy. I hadn’t imagined the danger. There was finally an answer.

But that answer also confirmed that my mother was dead—and that I had lost my father, my family, my home, my dog, and essentially every part of the life I had known.

In that moment, I understood that I was alone—or that I was going to be.

This is the worst kind of relief: when finally being proven right also completely destroys you.

If you’ve ever received an answer you desperately needed but wished wasn’t true, I’d like to hear how you processed it.
